Trim Options

The Hyundai Sonata comes with four trims: the SE, SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited. What's notable is that the two lower and two higher trims run on different engines. The SE and SEL use a four-cylinder, 2.5-liter engine, and the SEL Plus and Limited are powered by a 1.6-liter turbo engine that also has four cylinders. Horsepower and torque are pretty comparable; the 2.5-liter gets 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the turbo engine generates 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

Other differences are that the SEL Plus and Limited ride on 18-inch wheels rather than the standard 17-inch ones, the SEL Plus has leatherette seats, and the Limited has leather seats. At the SEL Plus trim and above, the car comes with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel, and the Limited is the only trim that has ventilated front seats, a premium Bose sound system, and a surround-view monitor.

Safety

The Sonata is one of the leaders in its class in terms of safety features. It has a full array of driver-assist features that can give you peace of mind as you get behind the wheel. The car can anticipate forward collisions and warn you about them, and it can even take action by hitting the brakes if necessary.

It can also keep you centered in a lane and alert you if it seems like your attention is fading. Further, the smart cruise control system can not only maintain a set speed when the conditions are stable, but it can also adjust speed to maintain safe traveling distance with other vehicles.

The Limited trim comes with a parking collision-avoidance assist system, and both blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring are included on the top three trims.

Technology

An eight-inch touchscreen is standard on the Hyundai Sonata. The SE trim features a color touchscreen that can play HD radio and having Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is a huge plus for our Springfield, PA drivers.

On the SEL and SEL Plus models, the infotainment system is updated to support SiriusXM radio and Blue Link technology. On the Limited, people get to enjoy using a 10.25-inch touchscreen that includes built-in navigation. This can make getting around so much easier when you're in an unfamiliar place or trying to figure out a good way to avoid traffic.

A cool feature is the Hyundai Digital Key technology found on the SEL Plus and Limited models. The digital key system is new for Hyundai, and we're excited about what it means for our Camden, NJ customers. It eliminates the need to carry a regular key fob with you; instead, you can set up your Android smartphone to act as your key. You simply hold the phone against the door handle to unlock it, and when you place the phone in the wireless charger, the push-button start will be ready to activate.

Interior

Inside the cabin, there's plenty of room to stretch out. Legroom in the front is a spacious 46.1 inches, and in the back, adults can feel comfortable with 34.8 inches of legroom. Both the driver's and front passenger's seats are adjustable, with the driver's seat being power operated on the SEL and higher trims. Heated front seats are also standard on the top three trims, and a heated steering wheel is featured on the Limited.
